What is ISO/IEC 17025:2017?
ISO/IEC 17025:2017 is the international standard for the general requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. It is the primary basis for NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) accreditation in India — the recognised national accreditation body under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
The 2017 version (current) revised the 2005 version with a stronger focus on risk-based thinking, impartiality requirements, and technology-neutral language allowing for use of laboratory information management systems (LIMS). It covers three key areas: management requirements, resource requirements, and process requirements — all focused on proving technical competence to produce valid results.
NABL accreditation is valid for 2 years (renewable), with annual surveillance assessments. Internationally, NABL is a signatory to the ILAC (International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation) MRA — meaning NABL-accredited test reports are accepted in 100+ countries without re-testing.
