Who has to pay advance tax
Advance tax is the "pay-as-you-earn" tax — you pay your income tax in installments during the year instead of a lump sum at the end. It applies to any taxpayer whose net tax liability after TDS exceeds ₹10,000 in a financial year. Resident senior citizens (60+) with no business or professional income are exempt.
Due dates & installment schedule
The same four due dates apply to individuals, businesses and companies. Each date has a cumulative percentage — by that date you should have paid at least that much of your total advance tax.
| Due date | Installment | Cumulative advance tax |
|---|---|---|
| On or before 15 June | 1st | 15% of total |
| On or before 15 September | 2nd | 45% of total |
| On or before 15 December | 3rd | 75% of total |
| On or before 15 March | 4th | 100% of total |
Section 234B vs 234C interest
Miss an installment or underpay and the Income Tax Act charges simple interest at 1% per month. There are two separate penalties — one for the whole year and one for each installment.
Section 234B — default in payment
Charged when you pay less than 90% of your assessed tax as advance tax by 31 March. Interest is 1% per month on the shortfall, from 1 April of the assessment year until the tax is finally paid.
Section 234C — deferment of installments
Charged when you miss the cumulative percentage due at each installment date. Interest is 1% per month on the shortfall for that installment, for the months of delay until the next due date.
How to avoid it
Estimate your full-year income early, pay each installment by its due date, and settle at least 90% before 31 March. Use Challan 280 on incometax.gov.in and pick "Advance Tax" as the payment type.
Salaried employees
If your employer deducts TDS correctly, most of your tax is already covered. Advance tax usually kicks in only on extra income — interest, capital gains, rent or freelance earnings not subject to TDS.
- Select the assessment year, salaried or business, and your taxpayer type.
- Set your estimated annual income using the slider or input box.
- Enter TDS already deducted and advance tax paid so far.
