IEC registration — what it actually costs
An Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit code issued by the DGFT that every business needs to import into or export out of India. The only mandatory cost is the one-time government fee of ₹500. There is no renewal fee — an IEC is valid for a lifetime — but it must be updated once every year on the DGFT portal (free during Apr–Jun).
How the IEC process works
The application is filed online on the DGFT portal using Aadhaar-based e-signing or a Digital Signature Certificate. Most applications are approved within a couple of working days.
Prepare documents
PAN, Aadhaar, a cancelled cheque or bank certificate, and the entity's address proof.
File on DGFT
Register on the DGFT portal, fill the ANF-2A form and pay the ₹500 government fee.
E-sign & submit
Authenticate with Aadhaar OTP or a Class-3 DSC and submit the application.
Receive IEC
The IEC certificate is issued and emailed, usually within 1–2 working days.
Key points explained
Do I need a DSC?
Not always. Most applicants can e-sign with an Aadhaar OTP. A Class-3 DSC (around ₹1,500) is only needed when Aadhaar e-signing is not available for the entity.
Is there a renewal fee?
No. An IEC has no renewal fee and stays valid for a lifetime. However, it must be updated once each financial year on the DGFT portal, which is free if done in Apr–Jun.
What is professional fee for?
An indicative ₹999 covers preparing and filing your application, uploading documents and following up with DGFT — optional if you file it yourself.
Who needs an IEC?
Any person or business importing or exporting goods or services. It is not required for personal use, or where GST covers the transaction and no benefits are claimed under the FTP.
