Tax deducted at source is the obligation most businesses breach without noticing. The tax is deducted correctly, and then the deposit slips past the seventh, or a quarterly statement is filed a fortnight late, and a fee accrues daily until it is fixed. This calendar sets out every date for FY 2026–27, the first year under the Income-tax Act, 2025.

The section numbers have changed even though the dates have not. Deduction from salary is now section 392. The unified table of resident deduction rates is section 393. Collection at source is section 394. The tax deduction and collection account number, and the quarterly statements, sit in section 397. Failure to deduct or pay is dealt with in section 398.

January 20277 February 2027
February 20277 March 2027

March is the exception every year and the one people forget: tax deducted in March is payable by 30 April, not 7 April.

Form numbers are not stated here on purpose. The forms practitioners know as 24Q, 26Q, 27Q, 16 and 16A are prescribed by the Income-tax Rules, and the Rules made under the 2025 Act renumber them. The statutory dates above are stable; the form numbers should be confirmed on the e-filing portal before filing.

What Being Late Costs

DefaultConsequenceProvision
Tax deducted but not depositedInterest at 1.5% per month or part of a month, from the date of deduction to the date of paymentChapter XIX-B
Tax not deducted at allInterest at 1% per month or part of a month, from the date it was deductible to the date it is deductedChapter XIX-B
Quarterly statement filed lateFee of ₹200 per day, capped at the amount of tax deductibleChapter XIX-B
Failure to deduct or payDeemed an assessee in default, with recovery and further consequencess.398
Recipient has no PANDeduction at a higher rateChapter XIX-B

Worked example. You deduct ₹90,000 of tax in July 2026 and pay it on 3 September instead of 7 August. Interest runs at 1.5% per month or part of a month from the date of deduction, so July, August and September are each counted — three months, ₹4,050. Four days of delay past the due date costs three months of interest, because a part of a month counts as a whole one.

A Working Routine

  • On every payment run: check whether the payment falls in the section 393 table, and whether the annual threshold for that payee has been crossed.
  • By the 5th of each month: total the previous month's deductions and prepare the challan, so the 7th is never the day you start.
  • By the 7th: deposit, and file the challan reference against each deduction.
  • In the month after each quarter: reconcile deductions to challans, verify every deductee's permanent account number, then file the statement.
  • Within fifteen days of each statement: issue certificates.
  • Each quarter: ask deductees to confirm the credit appears in their annual information statement. Errors are far cheaper to fix in the same year.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is TDS deducted in March due?
30 April, not 7 April. Tax deducted in every other month is payable by the 7th of the following month, but March is given an extra three weeks. It is the single most commonly missed TDS date.
What are the TDS quarterly statement due dates for FY 2026–27?
31 July 2026 for the June quarter, 31 October 2026 for the September quarter, 31 January 2027 for the December quarter, and 31 May 2027 for the March quarter.
What is the interest for depositing TDS late?
1.5% per month or part of a month from the date of deduction to the date of payment, where the tax was deducted but not deposited. Where tax was never deducted at all, the rate is 1% per month from the date it became deductible. Because a part of a month counts as a whole month, a few days of delay can cost two or three months of interest.
What is the late fee for a TDS statement filed after the due date?
₹200 for every day the statement is late, subject to a cap equal to the amount of tax deductible in that statement. The fee runs from the day after the due date until the statement is actually filed.
Which section replaced section 194 for TDS?
Under the Income-tax Act, 2025 the scattered 194-series has been consolidated. Deduction from salary is section 392, the unified table of resident deduction rates is section 393, and collection at source is section 394.
