What the 21 characters of a CIN mean
Every Corporate Identification Number encodes six pieces of information about the company — its listing status, industry, home state, year of incorporation, ownership type and ROC registration number.

Data source: Registrars of Companies (RoC)-wise Company Master Data, published by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs on the Open Government Data Platform. The dataset is refreshed periodically, so very recent incorporations or status changes may not appear yet — for a live check (including directors and filings), use the official MCA21 portal. Name search needs the full registered name; if unsure, search by CIN.

What is a CIN?
CIN (Corporate Identification Number) is a unique 21-character alphanumeric number assigned by the Registrar of Companies (ROC) to every company registered in India. It appears on the Certificate of Incorporation and on the company's MCA records.

How is a CIN structured?
The 21 characters encode: the listing status (1 letter — L for listed, U for unlisted), a 5-digit industry code, the state code (2 letters), the year of incorporation (4 digits), the ownership type (3 letters, e.g. PTC/PLC), and a 6-digit ROC registration number.
