What is an HSN code?

HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is a globally standardised system of codes used to classify goods. Under GST, every product is mapped to an HSN code that determines the applicable GST rate — 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% or 28%. Using the correct HSN code on your invoices and returns keeps you compliant and helps you charge the right rate.

Why HSN matters

The HSN code decides the GST rate on a product. A wrong code can mean charging the wrong tax, notices, or blocked input tax credit for your buyers.

Where it appears

HSN codes must be quoted on tax invoices and reported in GSTR-1. They also drive rate look-ups in e-invoicing and e-way bills.

How many digits do you need?

The number of HSN digits you must mention on invoices depends on your aggregate annual turnover in the previous financial year.

Up to ₹5 crore
4 digits
B2B invoices need 4-digit HSN. HSN is optional on B2C invoices for this turnover slab.
Above ₹5 crore
6 digits
All invoices — B2B and B2C — must carry a 6-digit HSN code for goods and services.
Exports / Imports
8 digits
Foreign trade requires the full 8-digit HSN as per the Customs Tariff, regardless of turnover.

HSN vs SAC

Both are classification codes under GST, but they apply to different things — goods use HSN, while services use SAC.

HSN — for goods

Used to classify physical products (food, textiles, electronics, machinery). Derived from the World Customs Organization's global system, so codes are consistent across countries.

SAC — for services

The Services Accounting Code classifies services (consulting, transport, IT, works contracts). SAC codes begin with 99 and are India-specific under GST.

How HSN Code Finder Works

  2. Optionally click a category tab such as Food, Textiles or Electronics to narrow the list.
  3. Read the matching rows to find the correct HSN code and its short product description.
  4. Note the GST Rate column shown against each code to apply the right rate on your invoice.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an HSN code?

HSN stands for Harmonised System of Nomenclature, an international system that classifies goods into codes. Under GST these codes are used to identify a product and apply the correct tax rate.

What is the HSN code and why is it required on GST invoices?

HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) is an internationally standardised system for classifying goods. Under GST, HSN codes must be mentioned on invoices to identify the applicable tax rate. Taxpayers with turnover above Rs 5 crore must use 6-digit HSN codes; others may use 4-digit codes.

How many digits is an HSN code?

HSN codes are commonly 6 to 8 digits, with more digits giving a more precise classification. The number of digits you must show on an invoice depends on your annual turnover.

How many digits are there in an HSN code?

HSN codes can be 2, 4, 6, or 8 digits. In India, the 8-digit code is used for customs and imports. For GST purposes, 4-digit or 6-digit codes are used depending on taxpayer turnover. The first 2 digits represent the chapter, the next 2 the heading, and subsequent digits give further classification.

Is HSN mandatory on GST invoices?

Yes, businesses must quote the applicable HSN code on GST invoices, with the required number of digits linked to turnover. It is also reported in GSTR-1.

What happens if the wrong HSN code is mentioned on a GST invoice?

Mentioning an incorrect HSN code is treated as an error in the invoice. It can lead to ITC disputes if the recipient's claim is questioned, scrutiny notices from the GST department, and a penalty of Rs 25,000 per offence under Section 125 of the CGST Act for incorrect details on invoices.

What is the difference between HSN and SAC?

HSN codes classify goods, while SAC codes classify services under GST. Both are used for correct rate application and return filing, but you use HSN for products you sell.

Is HSN code required for services too?

Yes. Services use SAC (Service Accounting Code) instead of HSN codes. SAC codes are based on the CPC (Central Product Classification) system. For example, accounting services have SAC 998222 and IT software services have SAC 998314. Both HSN and SAC serve the same purpose of classifying supply for GST.

Where can I find the official HSN code for my product?

The official GST portal (www.gst.gov.in) has an HSN/SAC search tool. The CBIC website also publishes the complete GST Rate Schedule with HSN codes. For imported goods, the Customs Tariff published by the CBIC has 8-digit ITC-HS codes which are aligned with HSN.
