Understanding SAC codes
Every service supplied under GST is classified by a Service Accounting Code. The code and the GST rate together decide what you charge on an invoice and report in your returns — search above to find the exact code for any service.
What is a SAC?
A Service Accounting Code is a 6-digit classification for services under GST, maintained by the GST Council based on the UN Central Product Classification (CPC). It tells the tax system what service you are supplying.
The 6-digit structure — Chapter 99
All services sit under Chapter 99. The next two digits are the heading (e.g. 9983 = professional services), then the group and the specific service — giving a full 6-digit code like 998314.
SAC vs HSN
HSN codes classify goods; SAC codes classify services. Both are reported in GSTR-1. SAC is mandatory on service invoices — 4-digit above ₹5 Cr turnover, 6-digit above ₹50 Cr.
- Enter a SAC code or service name (for example 998314, software or transport) in the search box.
- Optionally select a sector tab such as IT Services, Financial or Transport to filter the results.
- Read the matching rows to find the correct 6-digit SAC code and its service description.
- Check the GST Rate column against the code to charge the right rate on your service invoice.

What is a SAC code under GST?
SAC (Service Accounting Code) is a 6-digit code prescribed by the CBIC to classify services under GST. It is similar to HSN codes for goods. Every service provided in India must be classified under an appropriate SAC code which determines the applicable GST rate.
How many digits is a SAC code?
SAC codes are 6 digits long and all begin with chapter 99, which is reserved for services. The first two digits denote services, the next two the major nature of service and the last two the detailed service.
Where can I find the correct SAC code for my service?
SAC codes are available on the GST portal under the HSN/SAC search tool, the CBIC website, and through the official GST rate schedules. SAC codes start with 99 for all services. For example, SAC 9954 covers construction services and SAC 9984 covers telecommunications services.
Is SAC mandatory on service invoices?
Yes, service providers must mention the applicable SAC code on GST invoices, with the required number of digits linked to turnover, and report it in GSTR-1.
Is it mandatory to mention SAC code on a service invoice?
Yes. Service providers must mention the SAC code on their GST invoices. Taxpayers with turnover between Rs 1.5 crore and Rs 5 crore must mention 4-digit codes; those above Rs 5 crore must mention 6-digit SAC codes. Omission can lead to ITC disputes and penalties.
What is the difference between SAC and HSN?
SAC codes are for services while HSN codes are for goods. If you provide services you use SAC, and if you sell products you use HSN, both for correct GST rate and return filing.
What is the GST rate for IT software development services?
