Documents needed by business type

Every GST registration needs a core set of documents — PAN, Aadhaar, a photograph, proof of the principal place of business and bank details. Beyond that, what you upload depends on how your business is constituted. Companies and LLPs also need a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC).

Business typeConstitution-specific documents
Proprietorship DefaultOwner's PAN & Aadhaar, and passport-size photograph. No separate entity PAN — the proprietor's PAN is used.
Partnership / LLPPartnership deed or LLP agreement, PAN & Aadhaar & photo of every partner, authorised-signatory letter, and (for LLP) the LLP incorporation certificate. DSC required for LLP.
Private LimitedCertificate of Incorporation, MOA & AOA, board resolution / authorisation letter, PAN & Aadhaar & photo of directors, company PAN, and Digital Signature Certificate (DSC).
Others (HUF / Trust / Society)PAN of the entity, PAN & Aadhaar & photo of Karta / trustee / authorised signatory, registration deed or trust deed, and authorisation letter.

How GST registration works

Registration is fully online on the GST portal. Once your documents are ready, the process moves quickly — most applications are approved within about seven working days when everything is in order.

STEP 1

Gather documents

Collect the common set plus your business-type documents using the checklist above.

STEP 2

File Part A & get TRN

Enter PAN, mobile and email, verify by OTP and receive a Temporary Reference Number.

STEP 3

Upload & submit

Complete Part B, upload proofs and verify with DSC or Aadhaar e-sign. An ARN is generated.

STEP 4

Get your GSTIN

The officer reviews the application; on approval your 15-digit GSTIN is issued.

Key terms explained

Principal place of business

The main location where your business is carried on. You prove it with an electricity bill, rent agreement, or property tax receipt; for rented premises add a NOC from the owner.

Authorised signatory

The person permitted to file on the entity's behalf. Partnerships, LLPs and companies must upload an authorisation letter or board resolution naming this person.

ARN

The Application Reference Number generated after you submit. Use it to track your application status on the GST portal until the GSTIN is issued.

Timeline & fee

There is no government fee to register for GST. Approval typically takes about 7 working days when documents are complete and no clarification is sought.

Questions people ask

Short answers on GST Registration Doc Checklist. Tap a question to open it.

01What documents are needed for GST registration?

PAN of the business and of the proprietor, partners or directors; Aadhaar of the authorised signatory; a photograph; proof of the principal place of business; a bank account proof; and the constitution document — partnership deed, certificate of incorporation or registration certificate.

02What counts as proof of place of business?

For owned premises, the latest property tax receipt, electricity bill or ownership deed. For rented premises, the rent agreement together with the owner's electricity bill or tax receipt. For premises provided by a relative or partner, a consent letter with the owner's document.

03Is a bank account needed at the time of application?

It can be furnished within 30 days of registration or before filing the first return, whichever is earlier. But an account in the business name will be required, so it is best opened alongside.

04Is Aadhaar authentication mandatory?

It is optional in form, but choosing it speeds up approval considerably. Declining it, or failing it, triggers physical verification of the premises before the registration is granted.

05What extra documents does a company need?

Certificate of incorporation, MOA and AOA, a board resolution or authorisation letter appointing the authorised signatory, and the DIN, PAN and Aadhaar of the directors.
