What a lumpsum investment does
A lumpsum is a single one-time investment in a mutual fund, left to compound over your chosen tenure. Because the whole amount is invested from day one, it benefits from compounding on the entire corpus — unlike a SIP where money is added gradually. The longer you stay invested, the larger the share of your final value that comes from gains rather than your original capital.
How the growth is calculated
The calculator compounds your investment once a year at the return you enter. Estimated gains are simply the future value minus what you put in, and the CAGR (compound annual growth rate) for a single lumpsum equals your assumed return.
Tax on mutual fund gains
How your gains are taxed depends on whether the fund is equity-oriented or debt-oriented, and how long you held the units. These rules apply to units bought under the current regime.
| Short-term (held ≤ 12 months) | 20% |
| Long-term (held > 12 months) | 12.5% |
| LTCG annual exemption | ₹1.25L |
| Bought on/after 1 Apr 2023 | At slab |
| Indexation benefit | Removed |
| Holding period | No LTCG split |
Key terms explained
Future value (FV)
What your one-time investment is projected to be worth at the end of the tenure, after compounding. Calculated as P × (1 + r/100)ᵗ.
Estimated gains
The wealth created on top of your capital — simply future value minus the amount invested. Over long tenures this can exceed your original investment several times over.
CAGR
The compound annual growth rate — the steady yearly rate at which your investment grew. For a single lumpsum it equals the return you assumed.
Lumpsum vs SIP
A lumpsum invests the full amount at once; a SIP spreads it across regular instalments. Lumpsum suits idle capital; SIP averages out market volatility over time.
Questions people ask
Short answers on Lumpsum Calculator. Tap a question to open it.
01How is the future value of a lumpsum calculated?
Future value = principal × (1 + expected annual return)^number of years. Unlike a SIP, there is one investment date, so the entire amount compounds for the full period.
02Is a lumpsum better than a SIP?
Over a long horizon a lumpsum invested early usually ends up ahead, because more money compounds for longer. A SIP is better when you are investing out of monthly income, or when you want to avoid the risk of entering at a market peak.
03How are mutual fund gains taxed?
Equity funds held over 12 months: long-term gain at 12.5% above the ₹1.25 lakh annual exemption; held 12 months or less, short-term at 20%. Specified debt funds bought on or after 1 April 2023 are taxed at slab rates regardless of holding period.
04Should I invest a large amount all at once?
If the horizon is long and the allocation matches your risk profile, yes. Otherwise stagger it over a few months through an STP from a liquid fund, which reduces the impact of entering just before a fall.
05Does this calculation account for inflation?
No — it shows the nominal maturity value. To judge what it will actually buy, deflate it by your assumed inflation rate or plan the goal in future-cost terms.
