Key terms explained
Relieving vs experience letter
A relieving letter confirms the employee has been formally released from services on a specific last working day, with no pending obligations. An experience letter (or service certificate) instead summarises the role, tenure and conduct for future employers. Many companies issue both together on the last day.
Full & final settlement (FnF)
FnF is the closing of all financial dues — pending salary, leave encashment, bonus, gratuity and recovery of any advances or notice-period shortfall. The relieving letter usually states that dues are settled only once FnF is complete.
Notice period served
The letter confirms the employee served (or the company waived) the contractual notice period before the last working day. Where notice is short-served, a buy-out or recovery is typically adjusted in the FnF before the relieving letter is issued.
Why the next employer needs it
A relieving letter is the standard proof that you left your previous job cleanly and on record. Most Indian employers ask for it during background verification before joining — without it, onboarding can be delayed or an offer withdrawn. Keep the signed original safe.
Questions people ask
Short answers on Relieving Letter Generator. Tap a question to open it.
01What is a relieving letter?
A document confirming that an employee has been relieved of their duties on a stated date and has completed the exit formalities. New employers commonly ask for it as evidence that the previous employment ended cleanly.
02Is an employer legally bound to issue one?
There is no single statutory provision compelling it, but where the employee has served the notice period and settled dues, refusing it without cause has been held to be unjustified. Most state Shops & Establishment Acts support a right to a service certificate.
03Can a relieving letter be withheld?
Employers commonly withhold it where notice was not served or company property or advances are outstanding. That is a contractual position, and it is why the notice-period clause in the appointment letter matters.
04What is the difference between relieving, experience and service certificates?
The relieving letter confirms the date of release; the experience letter describes the role and tenure; a service certificate is the statutory version of the latter under state labour law. Many employers combine them into one document.
05What should the letter contain?
Employee name and designation, date of joining, last working day, a statement that the employee is relieved and dues are settled, and the signature of an authorised signatory on the company letterhead.
