Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana — at a glance
SSY is a Government of India small-savings scheme for a girl child under 10. It offers a high, government-backed interest rate and full EEE tax treatment — the deposit qualifies for Section 80C, and both the interest and the final maturity amount are completely tax-free.
How the SSY maturity is calculated
Interest is compounded once a year. In each of the first 15 years, your deposit is added and then the whole balance earns a year of interest. From year 16 to 21 you stop depositing, but the accumulated balance keeps compounding until maturity at 21 years:
| Years 1–15 (deposit) | bal = (bal + deposit) × (1 + r) |
| Years 16–21 (grow only) | bal = bal × (1 + r) |
| Total invested | deposit × 15 |
| Total interest | maturity − invested |
| Eligible | Girl child, age < 10 |
| Accounts per girl | 1 (max 2 per family) |
| Deposit period | 15 years |
| Maturity | 21 years from opening |
| Partial withdrawal | 50% after age 18 (education) |
Worked example — the maximum deposit
If you deposit the full ₹1,50,000 every year for 15 years at the current 8.2% rate and let the account run to maturity at 21 years, here is what it grows into:
Things to know
Section 80C deduction
Deposits up to ₹1,50,000 a year qualify for a deduction under Section 80C (old regime). The same ₹1.5L limit is shared with PPF, ELSS, LIC and EPF.
EEE — fully tax-free
SSY is one of the few Exempt-Exempt-Exempt products. The yearly interest is not taxed, and the entire maturity amount is received tax-free.
Who can open it
A parent or guardian can open the account for a girl child below 10 years. One account per girl, and a maximum of two accounts per family.
Withdrawals & maturity
Up to 50% of the balance can be withdrawn for higher education after the girl turns 18. The account matures fully at 21 years from opening.
Questions people ask
Short answers on Sukanya Samriddhi (SSY). Tap a question to open it.
01Who can open a Sukanya Samriddhi account?
A parent or guardian, for a girl child below the age of ten, at a post office or an authorised bank. A maximum of two accounts per family, with an exception for twins or triplets.
02How long do I contribute and when does it mature?
Deposits are made for 15 years from the date of opening, but the account matures 21 years from opening. In the intervening years the balance continues to earn interest without further deposits.
03What is the deposit limit?
A minimum of ₹250 and a maximum of ₹1,50,000 in a financial year across all accounts for that girl child. Missing the minimum makes the account irregular until a small penalty is paid.
04Is Sukanya Samriddhi tax free?
Yes. It is an exempt-exempt-exempt scheme — the deposit qualifies under section 80C in the old regime, the interest is exempt, and the maturity amount is exempt, whichever regime you are taxed under.
05Can money be withdrawn before maturity?
Up to 50% of the balance at the end of the preceding year can be withdrawn after the girl turns 18 or passes the tenth standard, for education. The account can be closed on her marriage after she turns 18.
