Claim your 194N TDS back in your ITR
TDS under 194N is fully adjustable against your tax liability — a CA files your return and recovers it.
Disclaimer: Indicative estimate under Section 194N of the Income-tax Act, 1961. The ₹3 crore threshold for co-operative societies and other special cases are not modelled. Verify with your deductor / advisor.
Section 194N — TDS on cash withdrawal
Section 194N requires a bank, co-operative bank or post office to deduct TDS when your aggregate cash withdrawals in a financial year cross the threshold. For a regular ITR filer the threshold is ₹1 crore; for someone who has not filed returns for the previous three years, it drops to ₹20 lakh with a steeper rate slab above ₹1 crore.
194N rate slabs
The rate depends entirely on whether you have filed your income tax returns for the three years preceding the year of withdrawal. Pick your status above to see the exact numbers applied to your amount.
| Up to ₹1,00,00,000 | Nil |
| Above ₹1,00,00,000 | 2% |
| Up to ₹20,00,000 | Nil |
| ₹20,00,001 – ₹1,00,00,000 | 2% |
| Above ₹1,00,00,000 | 5% |
Worked examples
TDS is only charged on the slice of cash above each threshold — never on the whole amount. Here is how the two statuses compare on real numbers.
Key terms explained
Who deducts it
The bank, co-operative bank or post office paying out the cash deducts the TDS at source and deposits it against your PAN — you receive the net amount.
Per-bank threshold
The ₹1 crore / ₹20 lakh limit is counted per payer. Withdrawals from different banks are not clubbed, but multiple accounts in the same bank are.
It is adjustable
194N TDS is not a final tax. It appears in your Form 26AS / AIS and is set off against your total tax liability — any excess is refunded when you file your ITR.
Non-filer penalty
If you have not filed ITR for the three preceding years, the threshold falls to ₹20 lakh and the rate above ₹1 crore jumps to 5% instead of 2%.
